Knowing Your Mission: The Key to Personal Safety and Self-Defense.

I recently heard a really impactful quote: “In battle, it is better to sheath your sword than to strike without purpose.” A profound insight, probably from a wise samurai of old. I’ve discovered that to move forward with purpose, it’s essential you first understand your mission. As Simon Sinek says, it’s important to figure out your “WHY.”

In my concealed carry and situational awareness classes, I always highlight how important it is to understand your mission. Mission statements in personal protection are important because they assist you in creating plans. If your goal is to get home safely to your family, then staying around or putting yourself in danger for strangers being robbed at the gas station isn’t really part of that goal. That’s what law enforcement’s mission is all about—or perhaps the person beside you is on a mission to help others, no matter what it takes. Finishing YOUR mission is not a source of shame.

I’ve had to set aside my ego and “hero complex” a few times because my personal safety mission is to keep my kids safe. In some situations when my kids were with me, I had to steer clear of “the fight” to keep them safe. It’s all about understanding your mission and staying true to it, rather than seeking heroism.

What’s your ultimate objective regarding personal safety? Have you thought about how far you are willing to go to keep yourself and others safe? If you’re feeling uncertain or want to establish a strong base for self-defense, I’m here to assist you in creating a personal safety mission with my firearms and situational awareness training. Let’s work together to help you move with purpose and confidence in any situation.
